Poland nursing a grudge

The EU deal that wasn't; striking doctors and nurses; and the Father Henryk Jankowski – Mel Gibson connection: the usual weird and wonderful stories out of Poland didn’t stop just because I went on holiday.

For the last two weeks now, nurses have joined doctors and come out on strike and camped themselves, literally, opposite the prime minister’s office. Just half a kilometer from where I live, a line of tents – a ‘white city’ - has emerged on the plush Ujazdowski Avenue, and lining the lush Lazinki Park.

Work to rule, even hunger strikes have been part of the protest – these people are pretty desperate. Not hard to imagine why as both sets of workers get less than the national wage for doing a job that requires a much higher than average level of skills and training.

The government has been unsympathetic (unlike the general public) to their plight and repeatedly claimed that ‘there is no more money’ – as they waste billions sending armed forces to Afghanistan and Iraq, and elsewhere besides.

The latest news appears to be an offer by health minister Zbigniew Religa for a 30 percent pay rise… next year. The nurses and doctors must be tempted to take the offer and pack up their tents.

EU agreement that wasn’t

Chancellor Merkel must have felt proud of herself when she got Poland to sign up to the new EU Treaty, an agreement which included Warsaw accepting a new method of voting that decreased its influence in Brussels. This was a surprise as the ‘square root’ method favoured by the Polish government was something that the Kaczynskis claimed was ‘worth dieing for…’.

Well, President Lech Kaczynski had to come home from the summit in Germany with his tail between his legs and very much alive.

Unfortunately, his brother, PM Jaroslaw appears to have been none too pleased by Lech’s work abroad. He suddenly announced days after the deal was signed and sealed that, in fact, Warsaw did not accept the deal. He said that it was unfair to relate the voting weight of a country to the size of its population. Why? “Because Poland’s population would have been much larger than the current 38 million if not for the Nazis (and Soviets) murder during WW II.”

Er…um…

This is indeed a strange argument. Should Ireland be given greater voting strength in the EU because it suffered a 25 percent decrease in its population during the Potato Famine of the 1840s?

As someone said to me at work today – to think something like that in private is understandable, but to use it as a negotiating tactic is ludicrous.

A better argument would have been to point out that WW II, and the Soviet occupation after it, severely stalled the lively development Poland experienced between the two world wars.

But even still – I don’t think even that argument would have increased Poland’s entitlement to EU structural funds.

Father Jankowski – a bit like David Beckham, actually

The Dziennik newspaper printed a story today revealing that the priest so prominent during the Solidarity strikes of 1980 has contacted Mel Gibson to direct the planned biopic of Jankowski’s life.

Funding for the new movie is no problem – some big name sponsors are ready to sign up. All the film needs is the delicate touch of Gibson, director of the film The Passion, which ultra-Catholic Jankowski obviously greatly enjoyed.

It was also revealed that Father Jankowski is releasing a new range of cosmetics – notably a perfume called HJ – and he is also, via the Jankowski Institute, opening a chain of cafes, which will be serving wine, vintage Jankowski, as every bottle has the priest’s face on it.

But what will this new perfume and wine smell and taste like?

Well some are expecting them to smell and taste of…anti-Semitism.

Jankowski has been repeatedly told off by the Vatican for his anti-Semitic statements. In 1997 the Polish Church was forced to ban him preaching for one year after these kind of remarks, reported by the Anti-Defamation League:

‘[Jankowski said]…in June 1995, with Polish President Lech Walesa in attendance, that members of the Polish government have secret allegiances to Israel or Russia, and that the Jewish Star of David was part of the Nazi swastika and the communist hammer and sickle. In December 1995, during a meeting at his Church, Father Jankowski said, "I have nothing to apologize for my [anti-Jewish] words...Why shouldn't we talk about such things as the murder of Germans by Jews? Why may we not talk about the Jewish-communist administration that governs Poland today? The reason is that they have banks, and everything else in their hands."

So will Jankowski become the new Polish David Beckham, endorsing all sorts of products, from wine to cosmetics, or is his ‘brand’ already tarnished by his ugly prejudices?

Firstly, welcome back. How was Venice? Your blog as you will have noticed has been pottering along quite happily by itself. I didn;t comment much, but it was interesting to read the rambleings and at some points aggressive utterings of your posters. I can see how i vae a lot to learn with blogging, as you go away for two weeks and generate 39+ comments, and by contrast i sit still in Lodz and generate zero! :) Oh well!!

Back to your post, i agree that the WW2 argument was spurious as it smacks of historical revisionism. This is a similar line to the Serbs claim on Kosovo. i.e. the 14th Century battle. You must deal with the present and concrete, and can't either hark back to bygone days, or justify your claim, by using a previous generations actions.

Your example of Kosovo is interesting. This is part of the national myth of Serbia. It is strange as it is building a central part of the national character on a battle which Serbia was actually defeated in (if I remember the history right).

So there you have the Polish catholic nationalist ideology. Serbian, Irish - and Northern Irish - identity is a bit like this too. It’s based on a victim mentality and on defeat and humiliation, not on positive Polish traits – and there so many of those to not have to rely on the past for your national identity.

As far as the blogging goes: Varus, there are many many blogs. So you got to find something that is different about your blog to someone elses. I read your blog. You have something to say. But you just got to stick out in some way. And eventually you get noticed. The danger is getting pissed off early on – when you get few comments, because most give up then. You just got to keep going.

And don’t be obsessed with the ‘comment’ bit either. If you check out some of the best blogs in UK, for instance – like Chicken Yoghurt – then you will see that his comment boxes are much less lively than mine. But he gets four times the readers, I guess. So comments are not everything and if you get them (most don’t) then they take a long time to build. Blogging is about the long distance runner, not the sprint guy.

Amen

Geez - yeah, I think that was egging the pudding, a little. But by 'big name' I meant known institutions. One of those, apprently is 'Prokom' which are known top software designers.

Didnt Jaro say that before the end of the summit? I say that by way of asking about your broader characterization, as the summit was a big hit among a lot of conservative Polish news sources. Jaro seemed to be doing some heavy handed negotiating with the result that a new voting formula would be postponed 10 years, and for now the pre-treaty/constitution formula would apply, which is actualyl more advantageous for poland's representation than the square root model!

Good to have you back:))

Hi BR, welcome back.
I felt bad that Poland may have shown in a negative light at the EU summit a couple weeks ago. They're getting bad press. Do you think it went well for Poland? I Was thinking they are aggrivating the EU. What do you think?

Dzień dobry!

Good post you had on Renegade's blog. Just passed by to say hi! and to feed my Polish nostalgia. I visited your country last autumn, and I was greatly impressed by Warsaw, the most organized and looked after city of all that I've seen.

Best regards

Anonymous said...

"Warsaw, the most organized and looked after city of all that I've seen"

A surprising comment! Much fondness that I have for Warsaw, organized and looked after are two adjectives that I would never expect to see particularly attributed to Warsaw. Not that it is badly organized or ill-kept, but there are plenty in the world that rate much higher, surely!

But I guess you add "... that I've seen"

Puppeteer said...

No really, it is.
Better than Paris, for instance.

beatroot said...

Greetings puppeteer. I must say that I Am a Littre surprised too by the comment abort Warsaw. Though the streets are indeed cleaner than London, for instance. But generally the local administration here is pretty bad.
And I will do other posts for Ren: getting lefties to realize the world has changed is something I am very interested in….

The coverage of Poland being intransigent was negative, but I can’t say I blame them – especially as it now emerges that what the rest of the EU thought was a ‘deal’ turns out, from the Polish government’s point of view to have only been a ‘discussion’… Come on…time to move on, me thinks…

It's been rumored that Beckham, via his freindship with Tom Cruise, is going to become a scientologist. So maybe Beckham can be described as the English Father Jankowski.

And I hear that Dawid Janczyk, the Polish u20 soccer player, is the Polish Wayne Rooney. But Szetela, who plays for the US, looked a lot better in Poland's 6-1 defeat.

beatroot said...

6-1 - wasn't that a shocker! So, POland goes out one day and beats Brazil - Brazil! - and then next day plays like a donkey with three legs. How so?

Anonymous said...

I watched the Brazil game but not the US game although I saw the fifa.com highlights.

They just gave up after the second goal. Maybe they were petered out after playing staunch defence against the Brazilians with only 10 guys. Or could they have been so dumb as to still be nursing hangovers after beating Brazil? The header for the Polish guy playing for the US was a beauty as was Adu's first of three goals. Go figure though... Brazil beats Korea which tied the US... Any given day... I much more enjoyed the under-20s than the "regular" world cup matches I've watched last year. Much more spirited (at least before that second goal).

The Prokom thing I do not understand and I am going on a report in POlishb press

Oh. Well, it is simple: in 1997 Prokom got a contract (well, not a contract: THE contract) for implementing a computer system for the reformed social security system at ZUS. Long story short, it was a screwup of monumental proportions; suffice to say that it took several years to have this system working somewhat correctly (and some people claim that ZUS still calculates their money errorneously). Of course, all the time Prokom blamed problems on ZUS and vice versa.

Interestingly, that epic disaster did not prevent Prokom from getting more high profile contracts...

It's not only about Warsaw streets, it's about the people, about life and everything. Maybe if one sees it from my Balkano-Latin-Arab perspective, it's the quintesence of everything we lack.
Now I'm getting nostalgic again.

beatroot said...

Cheers Opamp....

Balkano-Latin-Arab roots......

Wow! This sounds like a perfect mix. I have just been on holiday in Italian and Balkan countries and these people are great and know about ‘civic pride’ in their towns…And Arab people are the most welcoming in the world, in my experience…. But honestly, ‘civic pride’ is not big on the Polish agenda….

Warsaw? CLEAN and ORGANISED??

That's a surprise! Warsaw is a large city, there are better and worse places, but the city on the whole cannot impress I'm afraid. Even for me, a Polish person from Poznan living in Torun.

I remember how surprised an disgustd I was so many times in Warsaw: when for instance I found snow was not cleared from the pavements in residential Mokotów areas, but even in the city centre in Aleje Jerozolimskie! This would never be possible in Torun or Poznan. Or hundreds of posters hanging on bus stops, or bus stops being totally vandalised, or stalls selling whatever just near Centrum tube station. It is amazing, that Warsaw cannot handle these things. Not to mention parks, cleaning streets, cutting trees, taking down old posters (I will never forget the HUUUUGE layer of old posters glued to one of the pillars on a tram stop on Jana Pawła II........ There just seems to be no one responsible for keeping order of this kind. For me this is unimaginable, but I guess it shows the differences there are in Poland between regions. There are a lot of positive things about Warsaw: night life, job possibilities etc. but definitely not cleanness, order, or organisation..........

Have you seen a hospital in Warsaw? A school? A public office of lower importance? The state of these.......... Only impressive places in Warsaw are the ones where a lot of private money were invested. No other system seems to work there.

beatroot said...

I think you talking from a Poznanian perspective :-)

michael farris said...

An outdated Poznanian perspective (note for outsiders, traditionally Poznan seethes in hatred of Warsaw while Warsaw ... doesn't think much about Poznan much one way or the other).

For the last five years (at least) Poznan can match any Polish city in the amount of litter and grafitti defacing it. Modern Poznanians seem to think that any spot of grass will look nicer with a few empty beer bottles and potato chip bags on it and are trying to make public transportation more difficult by a concentrated campaign of destroying bus stops. They also have the charming habit of using the forests around the city as spontaneous garbage dumps. I could go on, but ...
Recent (within the last month) trips to Warsaw and Wroclaw make both those cities look far cleaner to me than Poznan).

IME Polish civic pride is all about history (and historic grudges) and virtually non-existent in terms of wanting the city to be/look orderly and clean. Again, IME people will complain about litter and vandalism but not enough to actually do anything about it.

Warsaw reminds me of most big American cities. A nice place to visit for 2-3 days but I wouldn't want to spend a week there.

My wife is a Polish hospital nurse.
She and her colleagues have hardly enough money to stay in in hospital accommodation from the communist days.Only if they combine a state job with a private job can they keep head above water ,often working a 12 hour day-no hope of a foreign holiday for them!
Of course the miners can insist on their generous pensions and retiring at 50 like Polish teachers, but the poor nurses now have to go to the knackers yard, not allowed to retire until 65 in future.

Could it be that the PIS Government are afraid of the miners because of the Power to disrupt they can weald if they go on strike and the teachers have to be kept sweet to teach that far right educational propaganda of Roman?

All the nurses have to defend their rights are hunger strikes and camping near the President's office. They cannot let their patients die or go uncared for.

It's time the Polish People stood up for the rights of Polish nurses to a living wage, not a poverty wage as at present, even if this means Civil Disobedience.

Anonymous said...

anonymous you must be joking right? you think other people make millions? my mum runs a business of accounting for other companies that use her office for outsourcing - she tells me vast majority have MINIMUM wage, and earn about 600 zl per month!! The nurses then get a wage that is in proportion to the general wage level in the society. And I am not going to pay extra taxes for the state healthcare that doesn't work and I don't use. Over my dead body. ;)

And Michael Farris: I've been living in Torun for three years now, but I still know Poznan well enough to know it could have never reached the Warsaw dirt level. And I don't have anything against Warsaw.
