Wojciech Wierzejski says...

...’If deviants begin to demonstrate, they should be hit with batons.’

That’s the views of the spokesman for one of the three parties, League of Polish Families (LPR), that make up Poland’s government coalition. He’s referring to the planned Tolerance Parade in support of gay and lesbian rights scheduled to take place in Warsaw on June 10.

And as Marcin Sobczyk reports in the Warsaw Independent the far-right politician thinks the recent protests and petitions against the new coalition government could not have been the work of true, honest Polish students (it was) because:

“There aren't enough anarchists in Poland to organize such large rallies on the streets,” Wierzejski told the daily Gazeta Wyborcza. “Homos organize those rallies using online chats and forums. They sign all kinds of appeals against [LPR leader] Roman Giertych.”

Wierzejski also reiterated his earlier statements that there was little difference between homosexuals and paedophiles.

“Every police office will confirm that homosexuals are a circle that is nearly 100% identical to the circle of paedophiles. It is a fact that does not require any research,” Wierzejski said.

What a charmer!

Troglodytes like him are now in the Polish government.

Did he use the term 'układ'? Or does PiS have copyright on that?
And the translation you quote was almost refined next to the ugly original.

'they should be hit with batons.’???

the expression he used was 'lać pałami', more like: '[we] should beat the crap out of them with (night)sticks'.
For a country that's touchy about its international image, Poland makes the damnedest election choices....

Because of Communism, Poland is 45 years behind the Western Europe on gay rights...

Then again, Europe as a whole isn't all that different from North America. The difference between Holland and Poland isn't much bigger than between San Francisco and rural Alabama.

At least in Poland, unlike in Holland, gay politicians aren't savagedly murdered like Pim Fortuyn... But then again, are there any gay politicians in Poland ?

Actually I think they were doing all right on it till some nutjobs (LPR and PiS) took a play from American politics and realized there's votes to be had from scapegoating gays. Another reason to hate republicans.

I agree with Sonia that the stagnation and isolation of the communism period is to blame for this.

I got angry emails where I work (from the UK Gay and Lesbian Humanist Asc.) for writing something about Polish homophobia without mentioning Catholicism.

But lots of countries are Catholic, like Spain, and they have gay marriages now more liberal than they can get in the UK.

It's not the religion, it's the lack of development.

How far they are behind western Europe? Compared to Britain its about 30 years maybe. The economy is 40 years, maybe more...

Polish gay politicians? I will investigate...

Thanks for that translation, Mike...

It's beyond belief that national politicians can use language like that in the 21st centiry.

Scum.

Exactly, Eulogist. Fortuyn was murdered by an 'animal rights' 'activist'.

Or, to be really specific, by someone who claimed to be a animal-rights activist (maybe because, in a politically-correct hierarchy, 'animal rights activist' ranks much higher than 'homophobe')...

Give me a break. Fortuyn was hated because he was gay and because he denounced Muslims as homophobes, not because he wore fur coats...

No, he was murdered by a crank animalist. He was hated but it wasn't 'them'... it was an almost random act of lunacy.

michael farris said...

IIRC the crank animalist (animalist is a good term, by the way) expressed his concern about the 'weaker' segments of the Dutch population that would be at risk if Fortuyn were to become head of government. I have no idea exactly who he meant (and no interest, I just hope the little creep rots in jail the rest of his life).

Mike: I am really pleased you like my animalist! Another one is 'anti-speciesism', but it doesn't have the same ring to it.

I can't stand those people. Lock them away for decades and force feed them Big Macs!

I'd entertained the idea of 'species traitor', but it apparently already exists in a different context, something to do with anarchism.
