Poland: land of sinners

The Da Vinci Code opens to packed houses around the country.

They were told by the Catholic Church to boycott cinemas this weekend as seeing Dan Brown’s story amounted to committing a sin (see previous post).

But the box office figures for the crucial first weekend audience in Poland shows that The DA Vinci Code is easily one of the most popular film in Poland so far this year.

In multiplexes alone, 279,000 people went to see the sinful movie, which translates into an estimated 350,000 tickets sold overall around the country.

More?

Sir,

The fact that you are British who are generally equipped with a pathetically low IQ may explain your lack of ability to comprehend reality. But that mixes ver nicely with your incredible talent to babble and repeat simple statements without adding value or having an original thought.

However, even idiots should be capable of checking facts.

According to stoplatka.pl, "Ice age: the Meltdown" sold 422,611 tickets on the weekend of 31/03. And thats just the first one I checked.

Details here:

Clearly, more than the number you quoted.

Check the numbers. Correct one of them. Of course, no one expects you to think thereafter and draw any interesting conclusions.

Ren, you are very sweet; Sonia, cheers.

The figures that I quoted were given to me by a Polish film distributor on the phone from the Cannes Film festival no less. The 350,000 is an estimate based on seats sold in multiplezes, which are the first cinemas to declare box office for first weekend sales. Usually multiplexes make up about 65% of the market here in Poland, so they usual practice is to add about a third on again and you get thr total.

After I posted, the same person rang and said that the precise figure for the first weekend was 341,000 tickets sold at an average of 200 seats per viewing (the usual is about 50 seats per viewing).

That's the figures I was given....

As regards the Tolerance Parade on Jun 10...yeah, I have already formed the beatrooters of this, thank you.

It's a good thing the church came out against this, can you imagine how high the box office receipts would be in the catholics were going too?

I think the catholics are going, Mike. They can't resist it.

More than 7500 tickets sold in the first two days in this pious city. Not only Catholics worship the opus Brown.

I'll comment again:

IT’S JUST A MOVIE! And Opus Dei is NOT secretive! It’s a lay Catholic Organization! It’s got it’s own webpage and everything! What is the matter with people?! The book is FICTION . . . and really not that well written. The book is full of Gnostic crapola!

This overreaction must be because people are bored. The people are bored, the Church authorities are bored. Everyone is just bored. That’s got to be it.

My priest--a Catholic priest--read the book. He likes the mystery. He’s looking forward to the film also. He said one very important thing: ‘Those of faith will be unaffected.’

Come on people: IT’S FICTION!

Glad to know there are still some real men of faith around... If all priests were like him, it would have been a far better place...
