The catholic church is turning against the Greens.
Some time ago you might remember that I was puzzled why a bunch of cross bearing Catholics were protesting against Greanpeace and other tree huggers who were protesting against the building of the Augustow by-pass through the Rospuda Valley nature reserve.
Some on the blog suggested that the crosses were just symbols of the graves being created by the heavy road traffic forcing itself through Augustow.
But I think they are wrong.
During the Lenten Meditations a few weeks ago, arch conservative Cardinal Giacomo Biffi (who Pope Benedict had entrusted the sermon too) said, as spiked reported:
Cardinal Biffi claimed that whereas Christianity stood for ‘absolute values, such as goodness, truth, beauty’, aside from a few hard core Catholics, Orthodox and Protestants, the masses are being seduced by ‘relative values’ such as ‘solidarity, love of peace and respect for nature’. Greenness, if it became absolute, would encourage ‘idolatry’ and put serious ‘obstacles in the way of salvation’.
Er…
While I am no fan of the tree huggers, it’s a bit rich to try and paint Greanpeace as the anti-Christ.
But you see, arch conservative Catholics are turning against the Greens. With atheist socialism as dead as a dodo, they have had to create another hate figure: the environmentalist.
Update: I later find out that the photo above is of Peter Singer, tree hugging’s philosopher of choice and zoophile – I thought it was a photo of the Cardinal!!!

It’s not often that spiked finds itself in agreement with a papal appointee but the worshipping of environmentalism does surely amount to the worshipping of false idols: it is almost a new religion in itself, with its emphasis on the wages of sin - measured out by our ‘carbon footprints’ - and its stipulation of a never-ending Lent (where we give up everything without even a Mardi Gras first).
My point has always been that tree huggers and deeply religious people have lots in common and are both deeply conservative. So I am surprised by this…

Environmentalism is a religion; the same way the communism is also a religion. In both cases, it is a suicidal, anti-human religion.
Why do you ask, "Peter Singer?"
And I wouldn't include him as a comfortable fit with the Greenpeacers.

I'm also surprised you're surprised. There are posters around Catholic Poland warning of the evils of yoga. It's total paranoia. The Church is lashing out at anything and anyone that might present the slightest challenge to its authority over the sheep.
When you say the Church is lashing out, bb, who/what specifically do you mean?
Are you saying that bishops are having these posters printed up, distributed to parish pastors, who in turn give them to parishioners with marching orders to post them in public? Or are you talking about fringe groups or one with fuzzy hats in particular?
br, I thought you were feigning you didn't know Peter Singer as some kind of teaching device. Hmmm. Very interesting. From where do you think springs this association of yours that links the looks of Peter Singer and Catholic Cardinals?
And again, br, more than a few "tree huggers" have problems with the likes of Peter Singer just as more than a few Catholics have problems with the likes of Cardinal Biffi.
Of course, Geez. What we do here is geberalization. More subtle greys can be less illuminating that a nice, stark black and white...
