Polish immigration causes Icelander xenophobia?

A 14 year old boy has set up an anti-Polish web site in Reykjavik. The newspaper Rzeczpospolita says that xenophobia is on the rise in Iceland due to an influx of Poles in the last few years. But have Poles unleashed a chilly tsunami of Icelandic racism? Have Icelanders blown their collective geyser? The beatroot investigates.

In three days the embryonic Icelandic race warrior gained 700 teenage members on his forum, calling for Poles to ‘get out’. And much worse.

It got so bad, says the newspaper, that the police were brought in to investigate.

“A xenophobic mood is on the rise in Iceland. The number of immigrants is skyrocketing, which makes native inhabitants uneasy and confused,” says Einar Skulason, of the Intercultural Centre in Reykjavik.

Uneasy, confused, racist Icelanders on the march! Eek!

In January 2008, claims wikpedia, Iceland had a population of just 313.736. Not really very many Icelanders, are there? But 12,000 Poles have migrated in - which, as a proportion of not a lot, is quite a lot. And maybe Iceland is rather large for a population so small, but most Icelanders live in the capital (it’s probably warmer to stay close) so Poles are perhaps fighting for a small space, for a small amount of jobs, and for a small amount of light hours.

Or maybe not.

An Icelandic source has contacted me – rootlets spread everywhere – saying that the Rzeczpospolita story is out of date. The anti-Polish ‘association’ that the kid founded is no more, after feeling the full force of Icelandic censorship. Icelanders, you see, are sensitive, Scandinavian types, who would not be so crude to rise, en mass, to xenophobic temptation.

The source says that there is no more negative feeling against Poles than there is in ‘any other country.’ I believe him.

And a well-known Icelandic pop star, popular with the kids, has organized a concert to ‘fight against racism and xenophobia’. Good.

The singer has - oddly in my opinion - ‘[...] challenged the prime minister of Iceland, who is half-Norwegian, to sing a song in support of anti-racism’[!].

That’s a brilliant way to protest. Ask the prime minister to sing!

I know a journalist who once asked Polish prime minister Donald Tusk to say something in English about his Kashub roots. He refused. But he did, endearingly, sing him a song in Kashubian! Which was nice.

But other postulates could be made by a new political movement demanding elected leaders belt out a tune. Bush should be made to sing ‘Yellow Rose of Texas’ while dressed up as Dolly Parton. Putin could sing 'These Boots are Made for Walking....'

And ex-PM Jaroslaw Kaczynski could be asked to repeat his barn storming performance of the Polish national anthem, where he demonstrates that he has clearly no future in the music business.

The fact that there are anti-racist movements appearing in Iceland does tend to suggest that there are racist sentiments there. Which is sad. Icelanders are one of the most inoffensive people in the world. I can’t imagine Bjork in jackboots. On the other hand...

Sounds like a case of youthfull hi-jinks to me. Did'nt I read somewhere that Icelanders were among the "happiest" people in the world?(after the Swiss of course)
Are we building a mountain out of a molehill?
One thing that is noteworthy from this post is that there sure are a heck of lot of Poles "on the move" around the world.

I went to Iceland once, for a few dark hours, and I can well imagine the kind of stir that foreign faces and voices could create there.

I am completely in favour of the singing premier idea. I think the United Nations should be transformed into a version of X factor with heads of state facing each other down in aria or rap contests. I'd watch it.

Now you've put the idea of Bjork in jackboots into my head… how am I supposed to sleep now? Huh?

I think the German nihilists were really Icelanders.

The thought of Bjork in jackboots truly makes me smile...

If that was Bjork saying that then it would sound, in her cockney Icelandic like:

"Chhhweee downt chare, weeeeiiii shhhtewl wunt chya mooney....or weeeiiieie fack chyooo uaaaap....'

Do you know the song on Bjork's first (and best) album, 'I miss you'? It goes:

I miss you/but I haven't missed you yet'?

Well, actually she sings it:

Iaaaa mish iyoo / Bat eye aven't mished iooo yeaaaat

The tune works to the quote above. Just sing it in your head and you can hear her sing it (and she is wearing jackboots at the time:

weeeeiiii shhhtewl wunt chya mooney/ or weeeiiieie fack chyooo uaaaap....

Works for me...

"No dogs or trees - if I remember rightly"

Because they eat them all!!!!

My father was stationed for a time in Iceland around WWII and his most vivid memory was that many otherwise beautiful young women had horrible, horrible teeth, as in black and rotting and/or absent.
I think it had something to do with vitamin deficencies in the diet that was too much fish and not enough anything else (and I assume no longer an issue).

Ah yes, the famous dog-flesh-and-bark stew of Icelandic legend.

Flying to Iceland on Icelandair I remember a sea of snow white blond hair and a mad guy sitting next to me who insisted on talking about the Herring War. It was very nearly as strange and enchanting as the Bjork-in-Jackboots video that was, sadly, never made.

Make no mistake island1, if an Icelander had the chance, he'd eat you and everyone you loved.

Well, they should remember that if they do something stupid up there, we might stop sending them Prince Polo:)

Before I get any annoyed Icelanders on here complaining about this, these comments are 'satirical' and not to be taken seriously (I know - but some people will not get the joke).

You can rest assured, Iceland. You are one of the few countries in thw world that simply has no negative stereotypes internationally at all.

In fact, when I close my eyes and try and form an image of Iceland it usually involves geysers and ...the genius pixie Bjork (and yop: she's wearing jackboots!).

In any large population there are wing nuts. We should not read too much into the idiotic views of people under 21.

Teens grow into stupid phases and many of the skin head Nazi types are young teens who grow out of stupidity. This is contrasted by people who continue to advocate, rationalize communism in spite of its history well into their adult life.

The man who is suspected of having by accident killed a four-year-old with his vehicle in Reykjanesbaer, southwest Iceland, in December 2007 and then having fled the scene, left the country yesterday.

The court order disallowing the man, who is Polish, from leaving the country, which had already been extended once, expired last week.

Police has not been able to prove that the man in question was driving the vehicle which killed the boy and the suspect has maintained that he is not guilty, Fréttabladid reports.

The investigation is ongoing and police are currently waiting for the results of a DNA test which could conclusively prove that the car which hit the boy belongs to the main suspect.

Maybe this influenced the case.

I aggre with Icelanders about some of the (younger ones)polish, they really act like its their own country, no wonder the teenagers feel like this.

I drove my vechile to the gas station.(At Breidholt) where I was provoked from polish boys; they seemed to want fighting just because i was there.

Same happend in a cafe where polish youngester about 20-30 years old wanted to start a fight just because I told some to move a bit while i was carring coffe and cakes on one hand.

Icelanders need to protect their population otherwise they will be wiped out, by numbers and culturally.

Polish immigrants are still way better then the middle eastern type Scandinavia has got or Europe.

I've spent most of three of the last five summers in the north of Iceland. Icelanders are pretty much the same as everyone else when it comes to racism. Some are very racist, most not much, and some not at all. Their most interesting prejudice is a dislike for redheads, that is traced back to the days when they took Irish slaves. If you want a real example of racism, explore the Japanese feelings toward the Japanese.

Being a Nigerian, I can tell you that the Icelanders are the biggest Nazis of the world. I went there as an asylum seeker and got nothing but the hatred of the locals. It became impossible for me to live there and I decided to immigrate to Denmark where I now live. Denmark is also a racist country but it is better than Iceland. Iceland is a Nazi country and all africans hate it.

A Nigerian who hates Iceland.

Well Iam a greek who wanted to move up to Iceland when I was younger but many years later I end up in Sweden. The thing I have to say for the Icelanders is that I wish they won't let their country end up being like Greece full of immigrants who most of them have a big part in crime. This that one person said about some Polish wanted a fight in to a gas station is something that happens everyday in Greece. I don't know why we will have to tolerate behaviour like this from people who considered to be guests in our homelands. As for the Nigerian he should not talk really much because his country fellow men have a big part in Greek crime and yeah I think there is no more space for Afros and Middle Easterns in Europe. Further more is not that bad if someone wants to keep his ethnic identity and his country pure. The Africans say that all people who don't accept them are racist. Maybe they should start thinking more before they talk. I read often about criminality stats in Iceland. I am sure before the Poles have arrived there the locals know really little about crime. I wish you can get rid of the ones who seek fights and troubles or else you will be in real problems. You won't be able to walk outdoor safe like what happens in Greece :( God help you

@Riccardo Nikolaidis... and that comment comes from a greek immigrant in Sweden. Hmmm so maybe Swedish should do the same and keep their country pure? some people...

Any one can easily slander the entire nation by disliking just one person, which is an absurd and totally unfair.
Stop blaming each other! Blame those in the governments that make lives difficult.
No one would have leave their countries wasn't it for the oppressive politics applied. What we need to get rid off is ZIONISM,the Bilderbergs and all the jewish banksters!

Hi, Icelandic friends. I am from Nigeria, a Hausa prince of royal blood. I seek help from any beautiful Icelandic woman who could help me transfer my inheritance of US$5 million to your country because the present regime in Lagos wants to attach my personal wealth. After the completion of the transaction, I will agree to marry the lady and make her a royal Princess which will make her an equal heir to my fortune. My more money is currently safe in St.Kitts Royal Bank which I need to transfer to your account within 15 days. Please contact me at asap. All my lady needs to do is transfer US$10,000 as transaction fee since only Iceland citizen can deposit the same. I will put complete faith and trust in my tender lady with such a multimillion my inheritance because I have no choice. My ex-wife Princess Ingrid of Hausaland (she was Swedish) cheated and divorced me and kept US$10 million of my wealth and I could do nothing to recover the money plus precious gems, crown jewels, pearls, ivory, rubies that she took. But Iceland women are very trustable therefore I am approaching. My mobile phone number is 001-6014985692.
