“Work makes you free” sign theft conspiracy theories

The theft of the "Arbeit macht frei" sign from Gate I at the site of the former Nazi death camp at Auschwitz showed one politician from the ruling Civic Platform party has delusions of an outside conspiracy, trying to make Poland look bad. (photo: Police image of alleged criminal working for dark international forces?)

The sign disappeared for three days before police, acting on a tip off, arrested five men up near Torun. They are accused of arriving at the Auschwitz museum site at around 03.00 CET Friday morning, unscrewing the five metre sign, hauling what weights anything up to 40 kilograms 400 metres, through a hole in the fence and into a van and then driving it up to northern Poland. There they sawed it into three bits and then hid it in the woods.

In those three days, politicians and others inside and outside Poland expressed how shocked they were, etc, and some pointed to dark motives behind the theft.

Avner Shalev, head of the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem was reported to have said: " This act constitutes an act of war."

A theory that neo-Nazis had set the whole thing up rapidly did the rounds. Others thought that this was a set up by those who want to do Poland down.

Civic Plarform’s Pawel Gras said the motive behind the Auschwitz sign theft could be to damage Poland’s international reputation ahead of January’s 65th anniversary celebrations of the liberation of the death camp on January 27. The timing of the theft was “no accident,” he told Radio Zet.

“If the case is not solved by [January] all of the attention will be on the theft and not the message that should be coming out of Poland,” Gras said Sunday.

That this was a criminal act, pure and simple, did not come into it in those three days when the sign was a sign of the times - when everyone sees a deep, dark motive of international scope behind everything that happens.

Today, however, everyone is saying that the gang of men, all known criminals, must have been paid by some weirdo collector. They were not neo-nazis. They were not international provocators.

But that’s a bit boring, isn’t it? I prefer what Gras might be implying: It’s the Russians wot did it!

I also provided an unbelievable amount of talk time on the nation's radios. I understand that it was a shock, but the publicity just turned these thieves into celebrities.

Obviously It not I as the first word, :)

ge'ez said...

Just plain old thieves? Who would buy the sign from them?

beatroot said...

Someone who ordered it. It's obvious. They would not have done it without knowing they had a buyer. People like the ones alleged to have done this would not know international dealers unless they had been put in contact with them first.

No matter what the facts may suggest or even so-called allegedly "prove" this was our old friend a "prowokacja".

jannowak57 said...

Gras was making a logical point and I didn’t see him point to Russia or any other country specifically.

Historically Poland’s enemies have tried to paint Poles as murderous anti-Semites in order to diminish western sympathy for Poland’s plight and we know Poland has many enemies both to the east as well as the west.

Not withstanding the actual circumstance of the theft, the successful Police action did an effective job of damage control. Now we need a swift and transparent investigation to determined who commissioned the theft.

beatroot said...

Jan - how can someone be making a logical point when he had no information to go on and was just spouting the content s of his slightly paranoid imagination?

Latest report on TVN 24 says that there is a Swedish connection. Four stole the sign and other guy who was leading them - Marcin S. was acting for a dealer in Sweden. The amount of money involved is not much - between 10 and 30,000 euros, apparently.

ge'ez said...

What is known about this dealer in Sweden?

Obviously, the guys who stole it were pawns. But who ordered the operation?

The big question that still remains is who was the buyer? And what were his/her/their intent? Their political background?

ge'ez said...

And PG, I'm assuming it's you who wrote the article noting that the authorities are putting out hints that the buyer was a Nazi memorabilia collector.

I spoze all sorts of folks buy such stuff for all sorts of reasons. But I'd like to know the background and motivations of this particular guy/gal/group.

I'm not assuming these motivations are anti-Polish but they might be. More likely, I'd guess whoever is behind this was motivated by greed and a warped idea of value.

And as for the flunkies who acted as the thieves, well, they should have known better as to how this would make Poles look -- at best as idiotic theives and worse as anti-Semitic and pro-Nazi thugs.

Given the atrocious weather conditions at the time, it is clear to me that this was not a student prank or a common theft.

Someone really wanted to have the sign. I'd put my money on a wealthy far-right nutcase.

What has the weather got to do with it?

This may sound odd but there may not have been much more to this than ordinary greed or a collectors obsession. Collectors are obsessed with certain items and are known to do bizarre things. There apparently is a man in the USA obsessed with Pan Am and has built a midsection of a plane in the USA. I have seen all manner of odd things including door hinges collected.

Ideally one would understand the historic and cultural significance of the artifact, but collectors are a strange breed.

Czarny Kot said...

When it's around minus 20 outside I don't think pranksters or scrap metal thieves are really going to be up for it.

To unscrew a big piece of metal and carry it away in those weather conditions you must really want it, or you are paid quite a lot by someone who does.

Beatroot. Yet nobody has compared what was a callous a botched theft, and the conspiracy theorising behind it, with the total demolition of the Red Army memorial in Kutaisi in Georgia on December 19th 2009.

This was intentional state vandalism far worse and definitely meant as a vengeful nationistic act by a far right government. But it was scarecly mentioned in the Western media.

I raised the comparison on a Guardian article by Peter Lazenby and for trying to broaden out the debate gor put on pre-moderation and smeared an anti-semite by the absurd oafs at CiF Watch.

The equivalent of what Saakashvili did would be if Kaczynski ordered the Soviet graves in the Rakowice cementary to be ripped out and the monument demolished.

But as Georgia is a strategic ally ( BTC pipeline etc etc ) and only big bully Russia ever commits nasty nationalist acts, the whole event has been virtual not news apart from one minor mention on the BBC.

Georgian Boy said...

Why would one make such a stupid comparison as to equate the demolition of the Red Army memorial in Kutaisi in Georgia to the sign theft at a Polish museum?

Georgia is a sovereign state and has every right to remove the symbols of Soviet/Russian oppression. No one would criticize the French for removing or objecting to a monument glorifying an SS trooper. Even countries of the former British Empire removed colonial era statues and monuments.

The errors in your logic are glaring, in your headlong rush to spread misrepresentations about Georgia and parrot Russia foreign policy you demonstrate your lack of intellect and third-rate educational background.

"Why would one make such a stupid comparison as to equate the demolition of the Red Army memorial in Kutaisi in Georgia to the sign theft at a Polish museum?"

Because that sentence minus the word "stupid" is a legitimate comparison to raise, that's why.

"Georgia is a sovereign state and has every right to remove the symbols of Soviet/Russian oppression".

Russia isn't the Soviet Union and the Glory Mounument was also for the 30,000 Georgians who died fighting Nazi Germany.

Which is why leading opponents og Saakashvili quite rightly protested against a "barbaric act". As reported on the KGB run station Radio Liberty.

Go and read it.

'The errors in your logic are glaring, in your headlong rush to spread misrepresentations about Georgia and parrot Russia foreign policy you demonstrate your lack of intellect and third-rate educational background'

The logic has far more to yours which seems as though you read Orwell's Notes on Nationalism not as a warning against it but a perfect model upon which to base a tedious form of nationalistic monomania upon.

I am not pro-Putin. I just try to be objective.

Blowing up a war memorial to ordinary Red Army soldiers is barbaric. If Lech Kaczynski tore down Soviet war graves in Rakowice cementary would that be justified in your opinion ?

Any sane and humane individual would say not.

But, then again, I forgot I'm now tagged and smeared as a professional KGB agent in league with shadowy far right anti-semitic groups.! What a joke.

People will read you and laugh. Which is what I'm doing as well. I'm English, I teach it and blog on Eastern Europe as a hobby. There is nothing sinister about me at all.

Don't be so silly.

ge'ez said...

Comparing the tearing down of Red Army memorial in Georgia to ripping up graves in Poland or anywhere else for that matter? Well, that shows where you're at, EEW. It sure comes off as if you just want to blow out of proportion the Georgian situation.

The Memorial as far as I understand, and I'm willing to be corrected, is to the Red Army and not just ordinary Georgians. Would you object if the Georgian gubmint opted to take off the Red Army inscription or even replaced the old memorial with a memorial deemed more appropriate?

Anonymous said...

EEW are you the conspiracy theory guy?

Having read some of the stuff on your blog, now I'm really confused.

That's pretty wild stuff pipelines, extraterrestrials and Polish soldiers in Afghanistan.

I don't understand in this "great game" who's side are the extraterrestrials suppose to be on?

I'm almost fearful of the explanation.

"Comparing the tearing down of Red Army memorial in Georgia to ripping up graves in Poland or anywhere else for that matter? Well, that shows where you're at, EEW. It sure comes off as if you just want to blow out of proportion the Georgian situation".

What is that supposed to actually mean? The principle is clear. Destroying minuments to the dead as opposed to toppling the statues dedicated to tyrants is barbaric.

I find it curious that such a simple moral precept is beyong the comprehension of so many people who would by angry if done to monuments in their nation.

AS when a youth was arrested drunk for pissing on a British war memorial recently.

Or as British Stag Nighters are wont to do when they urinate over the monuments to the victims of the Holocaust in Bratislava.

Such incidents, even the Stag Nighters torturing pigeons in Krakow gets into the media. But not this massive act of nationalistically driven vandalism.

I'm putting the incident INTO proportion and not doing the opposite. Which is presumably why you are suggesting I'm being unreasonable.

Think about it. If I took a sledgehammer to a commonwealth war monument, shat on top of it or draped red paint on it, would you call that civilised ?

"The Memorial as far as I understand, and I'm willing to be corrected, is to the Red Army and not just ordinary Georgians"

It is to memory of the 300,000 Georgians and those who died fighting alongside the Russians in the Red Army to defeat the USSR from invasion.

Which is probably why lots of democratic opponents of Saakashvili and the sculptor who designed it protested against it as desecration and barbarism.

Lazenby’s article - I read it at the time - said:

The theft of this symbol filled me with horror, reminding me of the continuing attempt by Holocaust deniers and apologists to erase evidence of the depravity of nazism.
Well, it may remind him of the “deniers” but it has nothing to do the denial. It was probably monetary gain and maybe some masturbatory material for some weirdo collector.

And it doesn’t matter that the sign was or was not ordered by a Nazi or whatever…the point is that this was a criminal case not an ideological one.

But East Eurpopean Watch - I think you are being a bit naïve - ours is a time when we look for the dark force behind everything. I remember at the time of the Fritzl case in Austria the Guardian, like many others, speculating that he imprisoned and raped his daughter in a cellar for years because he was from a small town in central Europe where they like to “keep their secrets buried.”

Bullshit. Fritzl was a psycho - period.

Help me EEW, I still am having trouble with your theory where I get lost is the part about the pro-Israeli extraterrestrials abducting the president of Georgia and hitting him with the mind control laser so he would do their bidding by removing a war memorial which sits a top of the secret pipeline route.. How does this relate to the secret and still hidden supply of crude oil under Afghanistan which is being guarded by the Polish Army.

The main stream media is just no covering this story the way it should.

No way, man! It does not compute. It does not add up. And it does not make any sense to do that. I certainly don’t go shouting from the rooftops how I make my money online. Thom Browne, Chris Benz, and The cheap karen millen Lake & Stars ELLE
Thom Browne, Chris Benz, and The Lake & StarsSeptember 14 9:59 AMby Misty karen millen dresses sale Sidell 0 Comments Chris Benz's SS12 collection. Photo: Imaxtree Three very different designers hosted three very different presentations this week:  Thom Browne invited editors to the New York Public Library while Chris Benz held court at Lincoln Center and the Lake and the Stars fittingly showed their hip swim and lingerie collection downtown at Milk Studios. Through the New York Public Library's marble hallways and staircases we went to catch Thom Browne's twenties-themed action.  After being corralled behind velvet ropes we watched girls pose as household items.  One, for example, was inside a birdcage resembling a cockatoo in a sheer white feathered dress while two others stood at attention, playing curtains to an invisible window.  Another emerged in Browne's signature avant-preppy clothes, fixing herself a drink as friends began piling into the room accompanied by human bouquets and extra-long cigarette holders gossiping (we guess) about suspended kilts and diagonally draped fringe dresses.  One last twist?  A jacket made of rubber ducky jacquard. Chris Benz has also never http://uk-karendresses.co.uk/ been one for straightforward fashion (hot pink hair!), so we weren't shocked to learn his spring collection drew inspiration from Warholian transsexual superstar, Candy Darling. "I started thinking about this collection during that string of super hot days in New York when everyone was dying and going a little crazy, so I started thinking about the craziest New Yorkers on record," he explained.  Benz envisioned his larger-than-life muse on outings to Coney Island, represented discount ray ban sunglasses by "disparate color blocking," artificial candy green sequins, and some incredible pairs of printed sneakers that spurred adoring reactions from the crowd's most heel-prone members. Thom Browne's SS12 collection. Photo: Imaxtree Nikki Dekker of The Lake & Stars explained their new swimwear line to us, "People kept asking if they could wear our lingerie into the water, so this just seemed like a natural progression." The design duo showed their latest collection at Milk Sunday night—also introducing a jewelry collaboration with karen millen dresses online friends and fellow presenters, Anndra Neen.  The two teamed up when, "we took a trip with Anndra to Mexico City and traveled around together." The Southwest was evident in the collection's sunset and brick color scheme—oftentimes accessorized with their travel-companions' specially-created large scale plate necklaces and miniaudiere evening bags. Now all that's left is clothes, but with lingerie like this who'd want to get dressed? Click here to see all of the spring collections! The Best Designer & Retailer Blogs ELLE
The Best Designer & Retailer BlogsMay 2 2:01 PMby Dhani Mau 0 Comments Photo: A.P.C. With so many news blogs about fashion filling up our rss feeds, we often forget that some of the coolest fashion blogs out there are those kept by designers and online retailers themselves. It makes sense—the people behind brands and shopping sites are exposed to so much creativity and inspiration with consistent access to a world not to open to regular folk. Blogs are an easy and inexpensive way for them to connect to their customer and to promote and define their brand, but they're coach factory also just fun to read.  Especially when coach factory they're consistently updated and the content's more than just self-promotion. Sometimes, they even make us like the brand/designer/retailer more. Here are a few of our favorites. Tory Burch Tory Burch's blog might be the most fully developed and has tons of interesting content, including behind-the-scenes stuff, inspiration, interviews and spotlights with people coach factory outlet like Sally Singer, Rachel Roy and Leandra Medine. A.P.C. Since A.P.C. doesn't seem to do a lot of publicity, their blog, A.P.C. Journal, is a great way to find out about their new collaborations and store openings. Our favorite feature is probably From Our Vault, which spotlights old A.P.C. ad campaigns from the `90s, starring the likes of Gia Coppola, Lou Doillon and Julia Restoin-Roitfeld. Band of Outsiders Scott Sternberg runs several blogs for his various collections, as well as a polo shirt blog, a blog about his cookie obsession and even a blog about legos. They're all surprisingly entertaining and addictive because of their obsessive nature, offbeat humor and occasional celebrity appearances. Opening Ceremony Besides showcasing all of their super cute coach coach factory factory outlet clothes, Opening Ceremony's frequently updated blog features interviews with designers, celebrities and artists, profiles of their cool employees, photos from their coach factory cool parties, and more coolness. Charlotte Ronson The Charlotte Ronson Diary is like gold for anyone with a Ronson family obsession. Vera Wang Vera Unveiled caters perfectly to the Vera Wang customer and includes styling tips and wedding advice from Vera herself. Topshop Topshop's blog is full of inspiration, event coverage, cute outfits, behind-the-scenes photos and videos, interviews and other interesting tidbits from across the pond.
