Gorbachev signed JP II contract killing?

The weekly Wprost, out tomorrow, shows a politburo document, signed by Mikhail Gorbachev, which appears to warrant a KGB contract killing on John Paul II.

Or so claims veteran American journalist iJohn O. Kohler n a book, also released tomorrow, Chodzi o papieża szpiedzy w watykanie (About the Pope. Spies in the Vatican). The politburo document, seen by Dastych, says: "Use all available possibilities to prevent a new political trend, initiated by the Polish pope….[…]…if necessary - reach to means beyond disinformation and discreditation."

The document, which dates back to November 1979 - one year after Karol Wojtyla became pope - is signed by eight top Party officials including Konstantin Rusakov - ominously the guy who coordinated action with the Polish Communist party, and Mikhail Gorbachev.

Gorbachev, for all his glasnost, was obviously deeply worried about the potential of John Paul II to inspire what he later partly did - Solidarity, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and so on…

In Rome, Pope John Paul II was shot four times on May 13, 1981 by Mehmet Ali Hagca, who had vowed to kill the pope back in 1979, though before the politburo document was signed. Hagca’s motives seem to be ultra Turksih nationalist, not in pay of the KGB.

I don’t think their is a lot of doubts the Soviets were behind the attempted assassination of the Pope as all roads lead to Moscow on this. The Soviet system was the most successful form of totalitarianism to date in that it understood the mechanisms of power and terror to meet it aims. The Soviets have a long and consistent history of using assassination to deal with problem individuals.

The question is why now has such a document surfaced? After spending a lot of time and resources to deflect their responsibility for the assassination attempt the KGB and the successor organization the FSB now just drop the ball?

It makes perfect sense that Gorbachev would have gone along with killing the Pope as Gorbachev intended to reform communism not abolish it.

But as I understand it this document was signed after the Turkish guy vowed he was gonna go and kill the pope. The guy was involved in a an extreme right wing group in Turkey, the Grey Wolves. Nutters, basically. He had already killed an editor of a newspaper in his own country, got stuck in prison ..escaped prison and then left a note saying what he was going to do.

The Turkish lad was the perfect if not crude instrument of the KGB, the Soviet KGB assigned to Bulgarian and East German agents with the Stasi to coordinate the operation and cover up the traces afterwards. And here is a Turkish lad already with a history of making treats against the Pope. For a mere three million marks the Grey Wolves supplied their boy for the deed. Under interrogation and questioning this nutter as you call him would not be able to give creditable evidence.

The Bulgarians are Orthodox Christians therefore the Pope was not a political issue to them in a direct sense. The history of the communist era in Bulgaria indicates that actions independent of Moscow were highly unlikely.

This Italian news report from 2005 also brings up documents:

“The files of the old East German secret service contain documents confirming that the Soviet Union ordered the May 13, 1981 attempt on the life of Pope John Paul II Italian newspapers are reporting.
Two newspapers, Corriere della Sera and il Giornale , are reporting that files from the Stasi, the East German spy agency, confirm the suspicions long held by Vatican officials. Documents in newly opened files show that the KGB, the Soviet spy agency, ordered the assassination attempt, which was carried out by the Bulgarian secret service.”
During the assassination attempt several high-ranking officers of the SB were present in the square and unsurprisingly part of the SB department assigned to work against the church.

I wonder if the IPN has anything on that?

So they found a willing assassin who was already committed to killing John Paul II.

Whatever his motives and whenever his vow, it sure seems like he got recruited and was paid by the KGB.

But how much of this is conspiracy theory and how much fact. Not convinced.

But the relationship between JP II and his attempted killer is an interesting one. By the time JP died his biggest fan was the Mad Tusk.

geez said...

This conspiracy seems more likely than not.

I don't know how sincere Agca was/is vis-a-vis JP2. And then, too, there is that matter of possible insanity. And from everything I've read about the guy, he didn't seem all the least bit bright, either.

Last news on him I could find was that he had been released from prison in 2006 but got thrown back in again shortly thereafter.

Seems he's been thinking of himself as "the messiah" during this time. During one of his trials, he was claiming to be the reincarnation of Jesus, too.

And a bit more recent:

"After Pope Benedict XVI was criticized by the Muslim world following the 12 September 2006 Regensburg speech, Ali Ağca wrote a letter to the Pope from jail warning him to cancel his planned trip to Turkey in November 2006. In the letter, he stated:

“ Pope Ratzinger listen to someone who knows these things very well.
Your life is in danger. You absolutely must not come to Turkey. Pope Benedict you must know that between 1980 and 2000 I was in contact with various Western intelligence services and with the Vatican.

In those twenty years, I learnt many things and I came into possession of many classified secrets.

For your own welfare, you must make a grand gesture of honour and resign.

Then you must return to your native land (Germany) and in your place an Italian cardinal can be elected Pope, possibly Tettamanzi or Bertone.

Then the Vatican should become a centre of peace and fraternity. The world has a need of this, it does not need hatred and vendetta ”

Pope Benedict's visit to Turkey proceeded without incident.

Yeah, saw the last one.

By the way I had t5o correct something in the text of the post - it was not David dastych who wrote the book out today. I know because he wrote rather irritated to tell me.

Oops!

4] Anatoliy Golitsyn also wrote in the The Perestroika Deception this important passage which we cannot leave behind - page 168:

April 30, 1993 - Memoranda to the CIA

Concerning the attempted assassination of Pope John Paul II, the author [Golitsyn] pointed out that, given the arguments addressing Polish developments in New Lies for Old [Golitsyn's first book published in 1984 - 94% accuracy in predictions - editor's note], especially those revealing Solidarity to be a product of 'mature socialism', it was clear that there was no motive for such an assassination by the KGB and their Communist intelligence partners.

The accuracy of this assessment has recently been confirmed by general Volkogonov, who has written that:

"Perestroika would not have been possible without a secret understanding between Gorbachev, Jaruzelski and the Pope...."

In any case, the KGB was not a primitive and inefficient service
which would resort to the use of the Bulgarian service to recruit a killer for hire, especially since the killer in question [Alli Agca - editor's note] had previously murdered a "progressive" editor in
Turkey.....

Hey, if General Volkogonov sez so...

That's It said...

that might explain Gorbachev recently seen praying at the Pope's tumb

It is clear that the old Soviet system and it successor state still fear disclosure on the failed attempt on the Pope’s life. The shear effort at dis-information both worldwide and in Poland suggests they continue with same tact they used with the Katyn affair.

It didn’t take long for their paid agents of influence to make an appearance here, on the same issue a book was written in Poland trying to deflect the Kremlins guilt. The author in question was dumb enough to show up on a talk show, were two journalists had the cheek to hand him his SB file (live in camera) showing him to have been an agent of the SB. I understand his career took a turn for the worst, a “civil death” as some people call it.

One would have to be pretty dense not to believe that Gorbachev signed it, and Jaruzelski participated.

geez said...

Yea, but why get upset about a hit on a guy who counseled Solidarity leaders to be collaborationist, hey 57?

OMG! Bob Avakian is back! Celebrate socialist Albania!

Surely he has even more insight into the Pope's assasination than even General Volkogonov!

Since the death of Pope Pius XII the Catholic Church has been under the control of the communists in the Kremlin. NKVD agents were specially trained and sent to seminary schools. Communist infiltration of the Vatican is a fact. Not being able to physically destroy the Church, the Soviets settled for seizing control and turning it into an organization that serves their ends.

A regime that came to power via controlled terrorism, that murdered many tens of millions of innocent victims and exercised complete control of every facet of life had no reason to allow dissent, yet we are to believe that people like Karol Wojtyla and Lech Walesa had some mysterious abilities that not only kept them from being silenced, but led to their eventual rise to the greatest heights of power, defeating a regime that could have exterminated them as if they were gnats. To believe that these men were in opposition to the communists is to believe a fairy tale. Both men were, in fact, agents of the KGB.

The Soviet Union and the combined forces of communism are engaged in a long-range plan to destroy the United States, the only country which stands between it and global conquest. the plan was put into effect at the 81 Party Congress held in Moscow in November 1960. The plan is based on deception and relies on infiltration of every Western institution in order to accomplish its goals. Within the borders of the Soviet Union the communists created a false dissident movement of which Wojtyla was a part. The ensuing liberalization was planned at the highest levels of the Soviet leadership. The ultimate "collapse" of the Soviet Union was itself staged.

Democratization of the Soviet Union is a myth. All has been engineered to strengthen the power of the communists and weaken their opposition. This has been accomplished and now the communists stand poised to physically eliminate all opposition. Disbelieve this at your own risk.

gees said...” but why get upset about a hit on a guy who counselled Solidarity leaders to be collaborationist”

Firstly because he got most of it right and made a huge contribution and yes I believe he screwed up the last part. Secondly the struggle against communism was also about having religious freedom which if you believe in democracy you have to support even if you are not a believer.

The murder attempt organized by the Kremlin was an act of vindictive stupidity; the Pope had already done the damage to them. Assassination is not an acceptable way to conduct foreign policy.

However if you were to look at today’s Kremlin, same old boys with new suits it seems old dogs can’t learn new tricks. The body count of dead journalist and loud critics of the regime is around two-dozen now, that’s only the well-known ones.

So you condemn as well the assasination of Archbishop Romero?

And call for the imprisonment of those involved in organizing and implementing the assasination?

And since we all know that the CIA was involved in assasination attempts on Fidel Castro and in the execution of Diem in South Vietnam and who-knows-what-else, then these guys should be held similarly accountable, too?

jannowak57 said...

Geez said: “And call for the imprisonment of those involved in organizing and implementing the assassination?”

No, because there are circumstances that would justify it.

Were it in you power to have assassinated Hitler or Stalin, what would you have done?

The assassination of Archbishop Romero was wrong, he didn’t argue for communism but rather social justice.

The assassination attempts on Fidel Castro were justified; Cuba is still a prison island.

His own countrymen, not the CIA, killed Diem in South Vietnam.

geez said...

Fidel Castro doesn't have the blood of millions of innocent people on his hands.

To equate him and Stalin/Hitler is more than a bit of a stretch.

It's nice to read, though, that you are not defending the Death Squads vis-a-vis Archbishop Romero. Those who shot him considered him a communist even if you don't.

You don't think the CIA was instrumental and complicit in arranging the killing of Diem?

That's like saying Agca wasn't put up to it by the KGB because he was a right winger.

jannowak57 said...

You haven’t answered the main question regarding Stalin and Hitler.

geez said... “Fidel Castro doesn't have the blood of millions of innocent people on his hands. To equate him and Stalin/Hitler is more than a bit of a stretch.”

Not my intention to equate him to Hitler or Stalin, but rather to illustrate that a dictator who has the blood of thousands on his hands, maintains political prisons and subjects the Cuban people to a pointless totalitarianism is far game.

geez said... “You don't think the CIA was instrumental and complicit in arranging the killing of Diem?”

I would agree the US green lighted the coup and likely encouraged it but Diem died as a consequence of this action, not a direct order to kill him. I believe American officials were surprised by his death and had expected that he was going to be sent into exile; certainly Kennedy did not expect it. This differs greatly from the KGB plot to kill the Pope, as their intent was the assassination and subsequent cover up.

geez said...

Tough question about Stalin and Hitler, 57.

I'm not so sure the course of history would have changed all that much if they were offed, especially if it was me doing the offing in the capacity of a foreign agent. Man's Fate?

There was a really interesting post-Rod Serling Twilight Zone episode that dealt with a nanny who somehow caught a glimpse of the future who then had the chance to strangle little baby Adolf. Not the same situation, just an interesting tangent.

And if Fidel is fair game because he maintains political prisons and has the blood of thousands on his hands, then what about GWB? At least the folks in Fidel's prisons have had show trials.

Kennedy surprised about Diem? Maybe so. Maybe not. Maybe these guys just feigned the bit about thinking he was going into exile. There's been enuff written indicative that they knew exactly what was going on because they planned it.

I figure that much what goes on at the top levels of power all over the place is mighty sinister. Life is too cheap to too many people, left - right -- and in between.

geez said...

Shitty memory mine. This was the TZ episode, even better than I misremembered it:

... an episode of the 2002 Twilight Zone entitled "Cradle of Darkness" features a time traveller (Katherine Heigl) going back in time to kill Hitler as an infant. The time traveller kidnaps the Hitler baby and leaps from a bridge, killing herself and the baby. A horrified housekeeper, who had witnessed the murder of the baby Hitler, does not tell Hitler's parents but rather bribes a homeless woman to sell her baby. The baby is then returned to the Hitler household where he takes the place of the murdered infant, growing up to become the Hitler that the world knew.

The poster known as "geez" is revolting, just like all communist apologists. Decent human beings can take solace in the fact that when the communists succeed in the destruction of the US government and begin mass murdering and enslaving the American people (and the people of Europe), Western communists, aopologists, and sympathizers (in short, useful idiots) will be the first to be liquidated, as they will be unable to conceal their righteous indignation when they are shown the true face of communism.

The only reason Fidel Castro did not murder millions is because of the small size of the population of Cuba. And even this is perhaps not true, for communist Cuban soldiers and death squads have been active on more than one continent for many decades. On top of all this is Castro's role in the assassination of JFK, an act that brought to an end American sanctioning of assassinations.

Equivocation of American actions with the actions of international communists is repugnant to any person who knows the true history of the 20th century, and is seen as the communist propaganda that it is.
