Foaming mouthed fascist-types get all confused about Polish gay monument...shock!(photo: gay monument, Amsterdam)
The proposed idea of an Amsterdam-style ‘pink triangle’ to commemorate all the gays murdered by Nazis during the Holocaust (between 20 - 40,000) does not appear to be popular with the usual suspects.
So reports (with glee) something called Overthrow.com, a far-right web site:
A group of Polish homos are planning to erect a giant gaudy pink triangle near Auschwitz as a "gay Holocaust memorial", according to homosexual newspapers this morning.
"We have to build this monument so that the people will not forget the thousands of gays who were murdered in the concentration camps of Poland," Łukasz Pałucki of the Citizens’ Initiative to Commemorate Gays and Lesbians told the press…, "It’s time to commemorate all the homosexuals murdered in Nazi concentration camps."
...Catholic politicians, who dominate the Polish government, went on record opposing the "memorial":… "It is a devastating idea and we shall not agree to this," Marek Makuch, a member of the Polish parliament, stated…
Actually, Makuch is a Warsaw local councilor for Law and Justice (PiS), not a ‘member of parliament’; and the proposed monument is not planned for somewhere ‘near Auschwitz’ but in Warsaw – several hundred kilometers away.
But as my dad always used to tell me: “Never trust a fascist (journalist)”.
I imagine it is a ‘devastating’ idea to some, though. But why? If gays as a social group were persecuted and murdered systematically by the Nazis then why not build a monument to them? And gypsies, etc...
At the end of the article, however, the far-right Overthrow.com web site shows its true colours:
The Auschwitz concentration camp was built by the Soviets in 1948 in order to support their phony propaganda about "six million" Jews having been "exterminated". It has since turned into an amusement park for Jewish self-pity.
“Auschwitz...built...by Soviets….in 1948….?”
Ah…I see...
What are the hopes that Warsaw local council will give the go ahead for it? At a conservative estimate - quite low.

Comrade Bob has the answers:

Explain a bit...looked at web site and got confused...
The idea is disgusting to me.
Nazis were exterminating numerous social groups. Putting one of them above the others by erecting a separate monument is nothing more than using the Holocaust as a political manifestation.
Far from being a grave threat, the shining beacon provided by the wisdom of Chairman Bob as exemplified in his many writings and speeches will shine a guiding light which will enable, embolden and ultimately empower the mighty international proletariat to combat homophobia and all forms of oppression and injustice everywhere.
Sure as shit, "if you want to change the world . . . you need to know Bob Avakian." Those of us who truly love freedom are called upon to read his memoirs and listen to "the whole 11-hour DVD set" of Bob Avakian speaking, and hold parties to view it with everyone we know. Truly, "People need this kind of leader to unleash their creativity" and let's face it, "if Lenin were alive today, he'd sound a lot like Bob Avakian".
The earth is quakin'
Follow Bob Avakian
The empire's shakin'
Follow Bob Avakian!
And last but not least:
Celebrate (what used to be) Socialist Albania!!!
The same groups protest when it comes to gay pride. How touching.
Geez - why have you developed an obsession with Bob Avakian, erstwhile leader ( I suppose I had better explain) of the American Revolutionary Communist Party, which - being on that side of the pond - was about as revolutionary and significant as my granma trying to get out of the bath?
Opamp - there are lots of monuments all over the world commemorating the deaths of different groups which died during WW II at the hands of the Nazis..... In Poland it is not even very well known that homosexuals were one of the persecuted groups. Why not a monument to that? If people remembered that the Nazis hated Jews, Poles, homosexuals, Gypsies, trade unionists etc it might make people think about what the Nazi world view was really like.
Nazis thought that Poles, and gays, were sub human. Maybe it's time for some solidarity?
In Poland it is not even very well known that homosexuals were one of the persecuted groups.
There is a reason for it. Gays killed by the Nazis were all German. Germans didn't persecute Polish gays in Nazi-occupied Poland.
Also, don't forget that many early Nazis (especially in the S.A.) were gay. They were all killed in the 1934's purges (known as the Night of the Long Knives, well described in Visconti's 'The Damned')... As Hitler tried to become respectable, he betrayed his early supporters, who became an embarassement...
BR, say it ain't so... You're smouldering the last dying embers of my hopes for worldwide socialist revolution. Y'mean to tell me that Chairman Bob's RCP is limited to the US, that there's no international basis to the RCP? Y'mean there are no cadres in Warsaw, Krakow, Poznan, Wroclaw, Lodz.... not even in Lodz? None in Tirana, Beijing? You're kidding me, right? Next, you're going to try to convince me there aren't enuff Trots in Poland to carry the casket of a fallen comrade!
Please don't confuse the Maoist-Hoxha-ite RCP with any Trotskyite organization!
Sonia - why if what you say about all the homosexuals killed were German is true - if - then why should that not be of interest to POles, or anyone else? I know about gays being murdered systematically by Nazis but I am not German.
It's a human interest story interesting to all humans.
nestor - I gedt the feeling you are still into your isms, ites, factions of factions.
The old left wing - don;t you just love 'em?
Beatroot,
why should that not be of interest to Poles,
I don't know, you lived in Poland longer than me, but I think we both know the answer to THAT question.
It reminds me of this old joke: a Englishman, a Frenchman and Pole were asked to write an essay about an elephant. The Englishman wrote 'How to save the Elephant'. The Frenchmen wrote 'How to cook an elephant'. And a Pole wrote 'Elephant and The Polish Question'...
Perhaps this explains the ongoing attempted coup against the mayor? The ducks are trying to make sure they have a mayor they can count on to stop this sort of thing.
hanna not filling out husband's PIT on time!!! What a scandal!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Madness.
but would have she given the go-ahead for a pink triangle? Me thinks not...PO are 'liberal' economically...they are not libertarian socially....
Thanks for the post, pretty worthwhile info.
