Bits fall off coalition. Apparently.

Lepper appears to leave the coalition – maybe - PiS talk to peasants.

I am getting bored of this. I just can’t find the strength to write anything about it. So see here

Yawn! Let’s have an election! Please! Put us out of this misery….

Polish politics is devolving from (very low) comedy to shabby soap opera with Jaroslaw and Andrzej who can't live with each other (and can't live without each other either).

I wish more Poles longed for the opportunity to live without both...

Sometimes I think Poland would run itself better without a government at all. After all, it's done OK for the last ten months without a functional one...

Of course, as a Polish friend put it to me recently, the only people left in Poland are xenophobic, homophobic, right-wing catholic nationalists. Everybody else is in London. My friend was wrong (there are lots of lovely people left here), but she might not be in a few years time.

Oh! The frustration of seeing such potential wasted in petty politicking...

I was going to suggest the same. Let’s form the Polish No Government Party (POGP). POGP’s slogan would be “Well, we had no government for 10 months and we have an economy growing by just under 5 percent a year, inflation is at one percent! Interest rates are 4 percent, the lowest in the history of Poland! So we are not doing too bad without a government! Vote POGP – you know it makes sense!!!!’

It’s a bit long for a slogan, but hey, it’s pretty catchy!

What on earth is going on over there? Is Poland on some sort of crazy proportional representation electoral system? Like MMP? If it's MMP, it's needs to be changed. MMP is specifically designed to create crap govt cohesion. And undue power to small parties who can hold the govt to randsom. Probably why our leftist govt doesn't want it changed - it's happy in that sort of crazy environment.

The system needs to be changfed. Yeah. Problem is that Poland is a very divided society, unlike New Zealand. So PR is meant to represent these different groups. But of course what you get is constant unstability etc and more time spent on propping up coalitions than getting on GOVERNMENT.

In a country like Poland, whose politicians show such autocratic tendencies, I am very glad that the electoral process uses proportional representation. Can you imagine what would happen if PiS won in a "first past the post" system? - the kind that ensures Tony Blair just goes on and on and on.

Funny you should say that. This morning Kaczysnki is saying he wants a PR system where the party who winds the most votes forms the government. A kind of mixture between PR and the British system.

Sounds like an elected dictatorship!

Perhaps you should persuade the army to copy Thailand. Have a nice, cheerful bloodless coup with the army commander stating that new elections will take place when the current economic growth falls to 2% or less!

My personal favourite voting system is STV. They use it in Australia, and we've used it here in NZ for council elections. It's semi-proportional, but the advantage is that there's is less vote wastage.

And I like the British one. 650 different contests and the guy with the most votes in each wins. That's it. It's sooo simple. Disadvantage is that it discourages small and new parties coming through. And if you look at the moribund state of British politics (where you have lots of little Tony Blairs) you will see what I mean.
But getting people interested in voting systems is quite hard. I thknk Lucyna and myself are in the minority here.

The British one is good too, Beatroot. NZ used to have it, but people got all antsy because they started to feel like it didn't represent them (due to alot of campaigning by the Green party, who didn't have a shit-show in getting elected the old way).

STV is great in that you can vote for the little guy, but then decide who to put your vote for next if the little guy doesn't get enough votes.

Poland's really on the back foot if she doesn't get her government sorted out. Surely history ought to be a guide here back when one noble could veto anything, thus prevented anything much from happening, and then allowing Poland to go backwards until it was swallowed up by hungrier, more aggressive powers.

That would be how I'd campaign to get the voting system changed - hark back to history and potential disaster when the goverment is in a shambles for a long period of time.
